The theme for Summer Camp 2024 is Journeys. Camp options and details will be posted soon, check back for updates. All camps will combine art, design, engineering, and outdoor excursions. Science Center programs are high energy, science-based, and tons of fun!
Summer Camp Scholarships Available.
The Sitka Sound Science Center believes every participant should have equal access to science education and research opportunities. SSSC aims to provide inclusive programming for people of all ages and backgrounds.
We offer scholarships every year to reduce financial barriers that limit access to enrichment opportunities. With backing from the Alaska State Department of Early Education Summer Learning and Enrichment Grant, participants can apply to have the cost waived for summer camp programming. Other scholarship funds are available throughout the year.
There are no prerequisites for this application. Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis.

What are the skills expected at the camps?
expand_moreGrades 1 – 3 camps: Campers should be able to move independently over uneven ground on relatively flat terrain. A typical excursion might take us to Sitka National Historic Park, around the loop trail there, and back to the Science Center. Campers should feel comfortable with group skills such as listening, waiting their turn, and practicing kindness toward others. Science content is integrated into stories, explorations, games, and projects. Activity work time is restricted to ~30 minute blocks.
Grades 4 – 6 camps: Campers will be expected to sustain 30-45 minutes of play or movement. They will practice listening to their peers’ ideas, planning as a team, and playing cooperative and competitive games. Science content is integrated into direct instruction, experimentation, and discovery activities. Campers will problem-solve challenges and work on projects for 45–60 minutes at a time.
Grades 7 – 12 camps: Campers in grades 7–12 should be able to sustain focus for hour-long field trips, feel comfortable swimming for short stretches in the ocean, and feel excited about time outside and stretches of physical activity. They will be expected to plan cooperatively and delegate tasks, support their peers, and be independently motivated. These campers will learn science content through direct instruction, individual experimentation and observation, group discussion, and Q&A with experts. Skills in these camps require maturity and compliance with safety instruction. Work blocks will be 60–90 minutes, and in some cases may extend for several hours.
